Project Red Dragon Hits The Dyno And The Track

If you’ve been following Project Red Dragon, you know the car has undergone a massive transformation. Gone are the days of filling nitrous bottles, as we’ve moved on to boost for a power adder. We also built a gnarly fuel system that could pump plenty of E85 into the 370 cubic-inch LS engine. The GM 4L60E transmission was also ditched in favor of a TH400 transmission to handle all the horsepower we’re throwing at the Moser Engineering 9-inch rearend. Another big change was the switch from an OEM ECU to a Haltech R3 VCU and custom wiring harness.

You can learn about everything we’ve done to Project Red Dragon right here on Dragzine.

Well, the hard work paid off and we finally got the engine properly broken-in so we could hit the dyno. We spun the rollers at Dynotune Motorsports and were able to lay down a stout 778 horsepower at 14 pounds of boost. Next, we took Project Red Dragon to Dragway 42 to get some passes in and see what the car would do. After a shakedown pass, tuner Scott Cordell took a look at the data-logs and gave the green light to let the car eat. With no transbrake to build boost, the Red Dragon went 10.28 at 147 mph.

We know there’s so much e.t. left on the table and even some speed, too, when we turn the car up more. The plan is to upgrade the TH400 with a transbrake for next year, which will allow us to actually build some boost and see what the car is capable of. After that, we’re going to work on suspension setup and power management so we can start chipping away at the elapsed times.
